The Demise of Bebo
Posted by Ken Thorkildsen on April 27, 2010
The recent news that the social networking site Bebo could be winding down as its owner AOL not prepared to invest further has left a mixed reaction to social networking. A purchase price of around $850m a little over two years ago and now seemingly AOL feel that they would be throwing good money after bad. So where did Bebo go wrong and where does that leave social networking in the main?
The general consensus seems to be the market that Bebo found itself in was unsustainable. Certainly within the UK, the usually profitable teenager market was found wanting and also a couple of bad news items really stuck the boot into Bebo. The aggressive marketing of Facebook also did not help Bebo’s cause and of course a social gathering, whether in person or on line, only happens where there are people and reports showing that Bebo had just under 13m visitors compared to Facebook with 462m really emphasises the cracks.
Perhaps the demise of Bebo will see social networking rise to the next level. Ken Thorkildsen of SN Marketing explains, “Social Networking sites including Facebook, My Space and to an extent Twitter will be watching the latest news of Bebo with interest and without question the next stage in the social network evolution will take place.”Ken continues, “This is excellent news for companies and businesses that will benefit from better platforms to network online”.

The Next Phase of Social Networking
Posted by Ken Thorkildsen on April 27, 2010
The demise of Bebo has been widely reported with analysts looking to the other major social networking sites so see the next stage in the evolution of social networking. It is anticipated that Twitter is to announce a new key word system long the lines of what Google introduced a few years ago with Google Keywords.
The new system will see users being able to buy “Key words” or phrases in the search content which will divert relevant searches to their tweets. Twitter is around four years old now and has never really moved into the market of being a profit driven business, preferring to build up a client base or user base. With social networking now evolving, and Facebook bringing in a reported $1bn dollars last year, Twitter now feel the time is right to bring in revenue to invest in their services.
Ken Thorkildsen of SN Marketing Group, a Social Network Marketing Specialist, says, “The news about Bebo has barely hit the newspapers but already we are seeing how the other social networking sites do not want their businesses to follow suit. With Twitter following a very good business model in Google Keywords, we will surely see over time investment to improve Twitter and of course, to attract more businesses to Tweet.”
Ken continues, “with Facebook already providing revenue through demographic targeted advertising inline with users profile, the door is wide open for businesses to take advantage of the extra marketing tool for their business.”

The Power of Social Networking
Posted by Ken Thorkildsen on April 27, 2010
For those of us lucky enough to have been in business since before the turn of the century, we have been witness to a remarkable shift in the way business is conducted, and marketed. Going back even further to the mid 80’s and heading into the 90’s e-business was rarely heard of, and most businesses were lucky have a desktop.
Fast forward 20 years and the world has become smaller, colleagues and competitors are within easier reach and customers are the ones having to do less work to get the product and service that they want. Social networking is driving the wise business owner faster forward and further away from his competitors.
What do those using Social networking to their advantage know that the rest of the competition do not?
Ken Thorkildsen, founder of SN Marketing explains, “Social networking really is not a means to an end, rather it is more of a marketing addition that can not be ignored. This, indeed, should make it a compulsory marketing tool and, used correctly, the time a business needs to spend social networking will be rewarded ten fold.”
“The beauty of social networking is that there is not usually set working hours, no need to attend networking events in person, although this should never be ignored, and the obvious one is that it can be fun!”
